The Japan packing rule
Japan is easier than it looks, but it rewards preparation. Trains are efficient, luggage forwarding is a game-changer, and the right shoes matter.
Shoes
You will take your shoes off often: temples, ryokans, some restaurants, many homes. Slip-on shoes are the answer. Avoid anything with complicated laces.
Cash
Japan is still largely cash-based outside major hotels and department stores. Carry yen. ATMs at 7-Eleven and post offices accept foreign cards.
A small day bag
You will need space for the things you accumulate: souvenirs, maps, a bottle of water, a folding umbrella. Many Japanese men carry a small tote.
Layers
Japanese weather can shift quickly, especially in spring and autumn. Layers are better than a single heavy coat.
Pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM
Connectivity is essential for translation, maps and train apps. A pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM makes the trip far smoother.
A sense of timing
Trains leave on time. Restaurants often require reservations. The last train is earlier than in many cities. Plan around Japanese punctuality, not Mediterranean time.
