Why we plan lunches, not just dinners
Dinner is a performance. Lunch is a conversation. A long lunch gives you the afternoon light, the second glass of wine, the dessert you did not plan, and the conversation with the waiter that becomes a recommendation.
Where the long lunch works
It works best in places where time is not the enemy: Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Argentina, parts of California. It works in a vineyard, a fishing village, a city market, or a courtyard where you can hear the kitchen.
How we book it
We do not just book the table. We book the time. We let the restaurant know you are not in a hurry. We choose the right table, the right menu, and sometimes the right wine in advance.
The effect on the rest of the day
A long lunch changes the rhythm of the day. It turns a morning of sightseeing into a prelude and an afternoon into a slow walk or a rest. The best travel days are built around one long meal.
