Why Antarctica is different
You do not go to Antarctica for comfort. You go because it is the last place on earth that has not been domesticated. The scale of the ice, the noise of the penguins, the silence of the sea days — all of it changes you.
Choosing the ship
The ship is the most important decision. Smaller ships can land more often. Larger ships have more facilities. Expedition quality matters more than luxury. We look at the expedition team, the zodiac-to-passenger ratio, and the educational program.
The Drake Passage
The crossing is either rough or calm. You cannot know in advance. We recommend ships with good stabilisers, the right medication, and a cabin midship on a lower deck if you are prone to seasickness.
When to go
November for ice and mating season. December and January for penguin chicks. February and March for whales. There is no bad month; only different priorities.
What to expect
Cold, wet, and extraordinary. You will land in zodiacs, walk among penguins, kayak if conditions allow, and spend a lot of time watching ice. It is not a luxury cruise. It is better.
